• What is a Hand Therapist?

    A Hand Therapist is a qualified Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist that specialises in the assessment and treatment of the hand and upper limb – from the elbow down to the finger tips.

  • How do I book an appointment?

    Use the ‘Book Now’ link on this website or the Mahurangi College Health Centre page. When making a booking, a parent/guardian email MUST be used to make the booking so we can direct the consent forms to them (don’t use your school email unless you are Staff). Alternatively, you can request an appointment via the ‘Contact Us’ link on the website, or by emailing hello@mahurangiphysio.com or phone 0223253007.

  • Do I need a referral to come and see you?

    No, we can assess you and process your ACC claim. You will need to fill out the Consent & ACC Form, click the link at the top of the website. Then fill in the Outcome Measure form that pertains to your injury. No need to print out forms! We can refer you for x-rays, a specialist opinion or to your GP if further investigation is warranted.

  • Are there any treatment costs?

    If you have had an accident or injury you may be eligible for ACC. There is no surcharge if so. There is however, a charge for non-ACC related claims. This is not common in a school setting, so please contact us to discuss the area of concern and/or charges.

    Hand Therapy splinting in most instances is covered by ACC. However, there are costs for materials for Physiotherapy. There is a $10 charge for taping ie. rigid taping and/or kinestiotaping. There are charges for ankle/knee braces but are dependent on the type of brace required. The parent/guardian will be notified first and foremost, so they have the choice to go ahead or not, and also to discuss alternative measures in regards to bracing and supports.

  • Do I need my parent/guardian‘s consent before I can have Physiotherapy and/or Hand Therapy treatment?

    Yes. Any student under the age of 18, must have gained their parent/guardian’s consent prior to treatment. Treatment will not commence until this is gained, and the Consent Form has been received by the therapist.

  • What should I bring to my appointment?

    If you have been seen for this injury ie. by your GP, or another Healthcare provider, please email hello@mahurangiphysio.com prior to your appointment: a copy of your referral (if you have one), your ACC number and any medical notes you have pertaining to this injury. There is the ‘Medical Referral Form’ Healthcare providers can use to refer you also at the top of the page. If you have been seen in hospital, bring a copy or email your discharge summary or operation notes.

  • How long will my appointment be?

    Time will be dependent on the complexity of the injury sustained. Generally treatments are 20 - 30 minutes. Splinting can take some time to get the best fit if we are fabricating them.

    In the case of post-operative hand therapy appointments, these may take up to an hour – however the student and parent/guardian will be informed of this, and it is recommended that you inform your teacher well in advance in this instance.

    We do appreciate your patience here at MPHT - we can at times run late, as we do triage acute injuries as they present - so we apologise in advance if this encroaches on your own treatment time, we do our best to accommodate all.

  • What happens at my initial appointment?

    You will be welcomed into the treatment room based in the Health Centre onsite at Mahurangi College, where we provide a calm, friendly and professional environment. We will then conduct a comprehensive subjective history of the problem and then complete a physical examination of the injured area. The probable diagnosis will be discussed together with advice and education, healing timeframes, treatment options and goal setting.

  • What if I need to cancel or miss my appointment?

    You can text, email or phone 0223253007. Please notify us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend your appointment. There will be no fees to pay for late cancellations or for non-attendance. If you do not attend without notice your parent/guardian will be notified via phone/text/email that you did not attend. If you had a school assessment, or there were other genuine reasons why you could not attend at that particular time, and you present later in the day, we will do our best to see you. Arriving late, but within your appointment time, you may receive a shorter consultation to avoid inconveniencing other booked students. Don’t forget that you can utilise Telehealth, if you find yourself laid up at home.

  • Do you use Telehealth?

    Yes, in the case of you being unwell or away from school, we can still utilise your appointment time by using Telehealth. Just let us know and we can organise that for you. Telehealth will also be available during school holidays as required.

  • Can I bring a support person with me to my appointment?

    You have the right to bring an advocate or support person to your appointment.

  • Can I book an appointment if I do not attend Mahurangi College?

    No, this Clinic is onsite at Mahurangi College, and is a service only for the students and staff of Mahurangi College.

  • What do I do if I have any issues or concerns about my treatment?
